Gold Ribbon Days

Wear Gold with the Sarah Grace Foundation

We’re at the crossroads of another September.   Nights will be getting cooler, and fall will soon be in the air.  It’s that time of year when school bells are once again ringing.  Many children will not be returning to the classroom due to their cancer diagnosis and severely compromised immune systems.  These children are not strangers to isolation and must avoid the possibility of catching a germ that can potentially lead to a deadly infection. Crowded classrooms and buses are too dangerous for them.  A child with cancer would love to be in a classroom, not confined to home and not spending their days as a patient in a hospital.   Every day 46 children are diagnosed with cancer and, on average, many of these children will not survive their disease.  Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States.

September is “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month”, recognized worldwide by a gold ribbon, the symbol of childhood cancer.  This September, The Sarah Grace Foundation is asking everyone to join us in raising awareness and showing their support by “Wearing Gold for Our Children.”  You can order your own gold ribbon through the Foundation’s website and wear it throughout September to honor children fighting cancer, remember those who have lost their battles, and show their families that they are not alone.

The worst nightmare for any parent is to hear the words “your child has cancer”.  Marissa and I will never forget the words we heard “we have triple checked the results and the cells we see are consistent with leukemia…”  For more than 23 years The Sarah Grace Foundation has worked tirelessly to provide a better quality of life for children with cancer and to ease the burden on their families.  As an all-volunteer organization and an IRS 501c3 recognized charity we are committed to make sure contributions received go directly towards our programs supporting children. We are the stewards of your generosity, and with your support, we provide toys, games, holiday activities, financial aid, funeral assistance as well as sponsorship of our core programs; “The Bead Program”, “The Escape Hatch”, “Gabe’s Chemo Duck” and “Sarah Grace Book Angels”.

Sarah Grace programs are more than services to children and families.  They are reminders to children and families facing an unimaginable journey that we stand with them; we walk with them; and they are not alone.

Our mission is to make more people aware of the challenges these children face and we hope you will take a moment this September to spread awareness, learn more and join us in supporting these courageous children.

Life is short, hug your children tightly each day, tell them you love them.  They are a precious gift on loan to us and a promise of the future.  Marissa, James and I lost a portion of our future when Sarah passed.  Every day we look at an empty chair at the table and wonder who Sarah would have become, what would she be doing.  Remember Sarah, her courageous struggle and help us honor her memory.

Throughout the month of September we will be sharing facts, information and stories to help raise awareness about childhood cancer. We invite you to follow along, share our messages and help us make sure our children are never forgotten.
